An exciting opportunity to join a specialist team of highly qualified engineers who assist major food producers to install systems that can safely handle materials in potentially explosive atmospheres. This business unit is growing rapidly due to the high demand for these services. This safety-critical work is both challenging and rewarding. If you would like to train to become a Chartered Engineer, our client will help you achieve this. 

You will be already qualified with a good mechanical engineering degree and we will continue to provide you with training in the specialist areas of your work. This work will require you to learn continuously, to hone your skills and the knowledge to become an expert in the field of explosion protection. In return, we will offer you an annual salary of up to £45,000 plus an 8% pension contribution and life assurance.

You will be working from your own home office but will be a part of an enthusiastic network of engineers. You will regularly work with customers in their factories. There are occasions you will need to visit our client and work closely with other engineers in your team. Preferably you will be located within 50 miles of Kings Lynn.

As a DSEAR Design Engineer, you will be expected to master many skills. You will already be an accomplished design engineer, competent in the use of SolidWorks. You will also have a high degree of experience in the design of food processing equipment. Ideally, you will also be proficient in ANSYS structural analysis and familiar with working with point cloud data. This work will require you to gain a deep understanding of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Area Regulations (DSEAR). You will learn how to complete detailed risk assessments and develop an in-depth understanding of process design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and clarify all new work requests ensuring information received is clear unambiguous and achievable
  • Become familiar with detailed technical standards and directives associated with DSEAR
  • Survey customers sites accurately using 3D scanning equipment and manual surveying tools
  • Register and process scanned images for use by CAD (Faro Scene, AutoCAD Plant3D, Faro As-Built)
  • Assist with sales enquiries, design, estimates, proposals (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Assist with DSEAR risk assessment
  • Liaise with suppliers to develop detailed specifications for components and services
  • Structural design calculations (ANSYS structural, linear and non-linear)
  • Prepare LEV calculations, design and risk assessment
  • Hand calculations for flow, material strength, geometry (paper, Excel)
  • Prepare detailed 3D and 2D models, layouts, assemblies, and detailed drawings (SolidWorks)
  • Design and detail for manufacture (SolidWorks, Enapps)
  • Prepare DSEAR documentation (Word, Excel)
  • Prepare process documentation (Excel, AutoCAD)
  • Prepare operation and maintenance manuals
  • Maintain schedules of planned and completed work
  • Assist with all aspects of project management
  • Provide commissioning support for new systems
  • Provide technical support for customers, suppliers, manufacturing, and installations teams
  • This role will require extensive site work
  • Provide technical/design support to the core business when requested

The Candidate:

Our Client is looking for a Design Engineer with a good working knowledge of DSEAR, design processes and the food industry, to work remotely. A professionally qualified Engineering degree in a relevant discipline is required. Additionally, the following key attributes are essential;

  • SolidWorks CAD Design Engineer experience
  • Food processing systems knowledge
  • Structural Design experience
  • Knowledge of plant surveys
  • Process Design knowledge
  • Installation/management experience
