Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Bedfordshire
Salary: £45,000 – £55,000 (depending on experience)
Hours: Monday–Thursday 08:00–17:00, Friday 08:00–13:00
About the Role
We are working with a growing engineering and manufacturing business that is expanding its customer base and increasing the level of machine customisation across its product range. As a result, they are looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of bespoke machinery solutions.
This is a varied role focused on the full mechanical design lifecycle, from concept through to build support, offering the opportunity to work on innovative and customised engineering projects.
The Job
- Create mechanical designs using SolidWorks
- Produce sales layout drawings using SolidWorks or AutoCAD
- Design machinery in line with customer requirements and specifications
- Generate and manage mechanical bills of materials (BOMs)
- Produce 2D drawings including assemblies, parts, and fabrication details
- Develop pneumatic schematics
- Collaborate with internal design teams to ensure optimal solutions
- Identify and support product improvements and innovation
- Produce machine manuals and technical documentation
- Provide technical support to shop floor teams during machine builds
- Complete internal quality documentation including test plans and validation records
- Liaise with internal teams to resolve design and build issues
The Person
- Mechanical engineering background
- Experience in mechanical design of machinery
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software (ideally SolidWorks)
- Strong problem-solving skills with a practical approach
- Ability to work effectively within a team
- Good IT skills (MS Office)
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work to tight deadlines
- Willingness to travel in the UK and overseas when required
- Valid passport
